My paintings depict a world that represents both my unconscious
and a recollection of art history. Still
lifes, portraits, and interiors correspond to people and things in the real
world, but in the paintings they are presented in a timeless space reminiscent
of a stage. The young women, plants, and
non-living things arrange themselves self-consciously toward the viewer. The subject matter is drawn from potted plants
and rooms in my home, as well as from walks I take through tree-lined suburban
streets. The imagery also recalls Dutch
still lifes, and works by Matisse and Manet.
The paintings of women portray friends, but they are made with works by
northern Renaissance artists like Jan Van Eyck and Petrus Christus in mind. Images of curtains, windows and frames as
well as the paintings’ relatively small size create an experience of entering a
porthole into this world.
